When we think of spirituality, we think of a person meditating in a small, serene hut far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is an idealized picture, but true spirituality is a lot more practical than that.

Over the years, I’ve realized that no philosophy makes much sense if you can’t even take care of your basic needs. Spirituality is not an escape route but the art of building inner strength through which you can confront every challenge thrown upon you.

Regardless of your situation, the journey toward self-sufficiency is essential. You may sometimes find yourself broke with money, but adopting a mindset of poverty is a negative choice. Being broke is temporary, but a mentality of poverty means no effort and growth.

When you have enough to sustain yourself and still choose simplicity, that is true spirituality. It is called renunciation — relinquishing everything you have gained or acquired. If you start with nothing, what is even there to let go? This, to me, would be escapism rather than spiritual development because fulfillment does not arise from such a life.

Accept your current life with grace, and remember — Spirituality is not about evading life or succumbing to poverty; it’s about engaging with it fully and courageously to adopt simplicity.
